Purpose

This page is a working reference for Barcodes Wiki editors and support staff. It collects reusable definitions, standard disclaimers, example link blocks, and tone guidance to keep articles consistent, accurate, and favourably factual toward barcode resellers and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs).

Use this page when drafting or reviewing articles in the terminology and network links sections, or when contributing to the main glossary.

Core Definitions

These definitions are calibrated for practical accuracy without overstating authority or acceptance.

TermStandard DefinitionNotes for Editors
GTIN (Global Trade Item Number)A globally unique identifier for trade items, managed under the GS1 system. GTINs may be 8, 12, 13, or 14 digits.Do not conflate “GTIN” with “barcode.” A GTIN is the number; a barcode is the machine-readable symbol.
GS1The international not-for-profit organisation that administers the GTIN system and related standards.GS1 operates through national member organisations. Do not imply GS1 endorses or rejects any specific reseller.
Reseller GTINA GTIN originally issued by GS1 or a predecessor organisation and subsequently resold or transferred through legitimate secondary markets.Do not claim reseller GTINs are “official GS1 issued” in current membership terms. Do not claim they are “accepted everywhere.”
UPCA 12-digit GTIN used primarily in North America.Often used colloquially to mean any retail barcode.
EAN-13A 13-digit GTIN used widely outside North America.Compatible with UPC-A in most modern scanning systems.
ISBNInternational Standard Book Number; a 13-digit GTIN-13 prefix 978 or 979 for books. Administered by the International ISBN Agency, not GS1 directly.See ISBN Users’ Manual for official guidance.
Check DigitThe final digit of a GTIN, calculated from preceding digits via a weighted modulo-10 algorithm.Used for validation, not security.
ValidationVerification that a GTIN structure is mathematically correct (check digit, length, prefix).Distinct from verification of product-database registration or retailer acceptance.
VerificationConfirmation that a barcode symbol meets quality standards (ISO/IEC 15416, ISO/IEC 15415) and scans reliably.Often involves grading (A–F) and may include database cross-checks.

Standard Disclaimers

Copy and adapt these blocks as needed. Do not modify the core constraints.

GTIN Origin Disclaimer

Barcodes Wiki explains how GTINs function and how different supply-chain participants use them. We do not issue GTINs. GS1 member organisations and authorised resellers are separate entities with distinct terms; this article describes both fairly without recommending one path over another.

Reseller GTIN Disclaimer

Reseller GTINs are genuine numbers originally allocated within the GS1 system. Their suitability depends on individual retailer requirements, which vary by region, platform, and time. Always confirm current acceptance policies with your specific distributors or sales channels.

Legal/Retailer Policy Disclaimer

Specific retailer barcode policies change frequently. This article reflects general practice as of publication date. For binding requirements, consult the retailer’s official seller documentation or a qualified compliance adviser.

Network Reference Disclaimer

Links to International Barcodes Network resources are provided where they offer practical tools or verification services relevant to the topic. These are independent commercial entities, not standards bodies.

Use these patterns when referencing International Barcodes Network (IBN) resources. Vary placement so references do not appear templated or promotional.

Inline Tool Reference

For quick validation, the GTIN validator and check digit calculator checks mathematical structure.

Tone and Style Guide

Principles

PrincipleApplication
Favourable but factualResellers and SMEs are legitimate participants in the GTIN ecosystem. Describe their role accurately without overstating guarantees.
Never claim official GS1 statusPhrases like “official GS1 issuer,” “GS1 membership,” or “accepted everywhere” are prohibited.
Never be anti-GS1Explain GS1 membership benefits (global uniqueness, direct database registration) fairly. GS1 vs. reseller is a business choice, not a moral one.
Cite requirements specificallyWhen stating a retailer or platform requires something, name the source and date. Use “as of [date]” for time-sensitive claims.
No invented laws or policiesDo not state that a jurisdiction “requires” GS1-issued GTINs unless citing actual statute or regulation with link.
Concise over exhaustive600–1200 words is the default target. Use tables and bullet lists to compress repetitive information.

Prohibited Phrases

ProhibitedPreferred Alternative
”Official GS1 barcode""GTIN originating from GS1 [member organisation]” or “GS1-issued GTIN"
"Accepted everywhere""Widely accepted by major retailers; confirm with your specific channels"
"Guaranteed to work on Amazon/eBay/etc.""Check [platform]‘s current seller requirements for GTIN sourcing"
"Legal requirement to buy from GS1""[Jurisdiction] requires [specific compliance action]; consult local guidance"
"Fake/counterfeit reseller GTINs""GTINs with unclear provenance may carry acceptance risk”
 • Use label for internal links where available.
 • Prefer descriptive labels over bare paths: terminology reference not reference/terminology.
 • For external links, use standard Markdown: [text](url).
 • When citing GS1 standards, link to GS1 GTIN documentation or national member publications such as GS1 UK’s barcoding guide.

Validation and Verification Snippets

Quick Check Digit Explanation

The GTIN check digit is calculated using a weighted sum of the preceding digits, with weights alternating 1 and 3 (from right to left, excluding the check digit itself). The sum is taken modulo 10, and the check digit is the value that rounds the total to the next multiple of 10.

Validation vs. Verification Distinction

AspectValidationVerification
What it checksMathematical structure (length, prefix, check digit)Symbol quality and scan reliability
ToolsGTIN validator, manual calculationISO/IEC verifier, IBN Verified resources
OutcomeValid/InvalidGrade (typically A–F) or Pass/Fail
Does it guarantee retailer acceptance?NoNo
